Fun weekend in Iowa

We traveled to Iowa last weekend for Jon's cousin's wedding and had a great time. I especially enjoyed getting to know more of Al's family since the only time we've met was our wedding 3 1/2 years ago.

The plane trip out there went well. We had a connection in Memphis so the only nap Maddie had all day was on that 40 min plane ride. The second flight from Memphis to Des Moines seemed especially long because Maddie was climbing all over us. I mentioned to Jon that I don't know how we managed an 8 1/2 hour flight two weeks earlier.

The wedding wasn't until 6:00 on Saturday so I asked Al's sister-in-law if she knew anyone to babysit Maddie. I'm so thankful she found someone for us. We took Maddie to the wedding and cocktail hour. I put her to bed at 8 and the babysitter arrived at 8:30. We had a connecting room to Al and Elaine's suite so the babysitter just had to sit in their room while Maddie slept. The reception was just downstairs so I felt comfortable with the situation. It was great. I only missed one toast at the wedding and Jon and I had a blast.

The trip back was a challenge. The day started out well. Our flight wasn't until 5. Luckily, the hotel let us stay in the room as long as we wanted and Maddie took a 2 hour nap. I was already nervous because we were scheduled to arrive into Nashville way past Maddie's bedtime at 8. When we landed in Memphis we discovered our flight was an hour and a half delayed. We considered renting a car and driving home because then Maddie could sleep in the car but it was too expensive and we'd get home later. Maddie went into crazy mode. She was running up and down the hallway in the terminal and was so overtired. Once on the plane she fell asleep as soon as we took off. Thank goodness because it was such a full flight (with about 4 other toddlers and babies on it) that Jon and I didn't have seats together. We pulled into our driveway at 11 and Maddie didn't fall asleep until midnight (to wake up the next morning at 6). Wow, was I tired the next day. Anyways, we made it and I'm so thankful we don't have any more flights planned for 2 1/2 months. The trip was definitely worth the hassle though. I believe in the long run you remember the time you have with family and not the travel getting there.

"Get out of the way slow-poke!"

Walking to dinner Friday night.

Going after Laird's beer with a straw.

I guess I could have helped Elaine with her bags.

Jon with his grandparents.

Maddie's only bath for the weekend. Elaine taught her to "hide her hooters".

Sweet, clean baby.

There was an awesome market on Saturday.

Kisses for Maddie

Maddie loves her Grandpa. She lights up whenever she sees him.

The beautiful bride.

Cousins

I think someone's sleepy.

"Here Mom, I found where we're sitting."

Breakfast the next morning

Reading the paper with Grandpa.

Jumping on the bed with Nana; Grandpa seems more interested in the price of hogs.

I'll second the previous post. ;-) You guys have so much fun it's great to hear about it. Maddie is growing up fast and you are looking great! Here's to being all done with the medical training/rotations stuff for Jon. My John just started med school so we're at the beginning of the process. Keep having fun. Loved your smile in that dancing picture!
